Focus Mode in Windows Terminal

When you open Windows Terminal, it typically opens in a single tab window, similar to the traditional Command Prompt window. However, Windows Terminal is highly customizable. You can choose to launch the terminal as maximized, full screen, default (in a window), focus mode, or maximized focus mode.

Setting the Windows Terminal to launch in Focus mode opens the Terminal in Windowed mode without tabs and the title bar. The tabs and the title bar will be hidden in the Focus mode, allowing you to focus solely on the terminal content.

Enabling the focus mode is straightforward, but exiting the focus mode can be a bit tricky. We will show you ways to exit and/or disable Focus mode in Windows Terminal.

Exit or Disable Focus Mode in Windows Terminal

f you enter focus mode, the tabs and title bar will be hidden, and you won’t have access to the Terminal window settings. Since the menu becomes inaccessible, it may seem like there’s no way to exit or disable focus mode. However, there are a few different ways to exit focus mode in Windows Terminal, all of which involve keyboard shortcut keys.

1. When you are in the focus mode, press + + shortcut keys to access the command palette.

2. The interactive command palette feature will pop up with a list of actions that you can run inside the Windows Terminal. Search for focus in the search box at the top. Then, click on the Toggle focus mode command to enter or exit the focus mode.

When you use this method, your Windows Terminal will exit focus mode right away. You can also use this same method to quickly enter focus mode without having to go to the settings to change the mode and relaunch the app.

The method mentioned above only applies to the current session of the Windows Terminal. If you have set the focus mode as the default launch mode, the terminal will return to focus mode whenever you relaunch it. If you want to completely disable the focus mode, then follow the next section.

Disable the Focus Mode using Settings

Another way you can disable Mode is by using Settings. As we mentioned before, there’s no menu bar visible in the focus mode to enter settings. However, you can always access settings using the keyboard shortcut in Windows Terminal.

1. To access settings, press the shortcut keys + on the keyboard.

2. In the Settings window, click the Startup tab then expand the Launch parameters option.

3. Select the Default option or Maximized option which will run the terminal in full screen with all tabs and title bar still visible.

Note Note: Both ‘Full screen’ mode and ‘Maximized focus’ mode are just as same as the Focus mode. If you select these modes, you will not be able to see tabs and the title bar of the Terminal.

4. After selecting the mode, click the button at the bottom right corner to confirm the changes. When you relaunch the app, this action will open the terminal in the selected mode.

5. You can close the Terminal from the Taskbar or by pressing + and then relaunch it.
