How to Determine if Microsoft Office is Installed with Click-to-Run Technology Or MSI-based

Click-to-Run (CTR) Technology

Microsoft® Click-to-Run (CTR) Technology is quickly replacing the traditional installation method for Microsoft Office®. It was introduced in Office 2010, however, Office 2013 now uses this installation method by default, and it is the primary or only installation method for many editions.

Is my Office Click-to-Run or MSI-based

1. Open an Office application, such as Outlook or Word.

2. Go to File > Account or Office Account.

  • If you see an “Update Options” item, you have a Click-to-Run installation.
  • If you don’t see the “Update Options” item, you have an MSI-based install.
